Dwight's work is influenced by thinkers such as Palo Ferrier (Pedagogy of the Oppressed), Carter G. Woodson (The Miseducation of the Negro), and Akala (Natives), among other critical thinkers who have put forward innovative and anti-colonial models of education. He is interested in culture as a tool for social change and a pathway to self-awareness and knowledge of self.
